Here I am doing a profile
on Elliot Lake and the surrounding area. The city was almost flatened due
to the mine shutting down but it was rescued and is now a thriving city at
the top of Lake Huron in Northern Ontario. I'd also like to express my
thanks to lots of the residents and the officials of Elliot Lake for
making my stay so enjoyable.
A City is Born - The Story
of Elliot Lake
Elliot Lake’s Rise,
Fall, and Reinvention in Northern Ontario
Once a haven of the uranium mining industry, Elliot Lake hit the jackpot
in the 1950s. The town was built in record time to house miners and
their families, and the infrastructure that a brand new community would
need. However by the mid-1990s all the mines were closed and Elliot Lake
had become a ghost town. With some smart rebranding the area was touted
as the ultimate retirement community - the natural beauty of the
landscape and cheap housing proved to be a real draw to folks in the
autumn of their life. But life isn't perfect in Elliot Lake, the aging
population are dealing with the aftermath of life in the mines and
combined with limited health resources, is the town at its next big
crossroads?
