SIR ALEXANDER MACKENZIE

Canada's Stonemason Prime Minister
The Honourable Alexander Mackenzie

Alexander Mackenzie was Canada's second prime minister 1873-1878. He was a self-educated stonemason who immigrated to Canada in 1842. He was known and loved for his honesty and integrity. In keeping with his humble beginnings, he declined knighthood three times. This video covers his entire life including: humble beginnings in Scotland; tragedies and triumphs as a young stonemason, husband & father; pre-Confederation days as a vocal Reform journalist and politician; reluctant Liberal leader and Prime Minister; silent declining days in opposition; and, final trip and tributes. It includes a number of family archival images and has been updated from an earlier video.
