Impact of extreme weather and natural disasters in 2023
In 2023, 23% of Canadian households reported having experienced an
extreme weather event or a natural disaster. The most frequently
reported impact of extreme weather was poor air quality (58%),
followed by a loss of power for less than 24 hours (46%). About 15%
of households affected by an extreme weather event reported having
damage to their dwelling, with households in the Maritime provinces
being most likely to report experiencing this. Households in the
Maritime provinces were also most likely to report having power
outages lasting longer than 24 hours and more likely report having
had to throw out food.

Fresh food sales at general merchandise retailers increase at triple
the pace of those at food and beverage retailers Fresh foods and
other perishables continued to make up a higher proportion of sales
among food and beverage retailers than general merchandise retailers
from 2023 to 2024. Over the same period, fresh food sales increased
by $1.6 billion (+2.7%) to $62.2 billion for food and beverage
retailers and by $1.6 billion (+8.0%) to $22.2 billion for general
merchandise retailers. Though sales for both retailer types
increased by the same amount, the near-triple rate of increase among
general merchandise retailers may suggest a consumer shift toward
seeking better deals.

Lessons for Canada from Spain's Grid
Collapse
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney campaigned on creating a
national power grid that will include a high percentage of renewable
energy. There are lessons to be learned from the April 28 power grid
blackout in Spain and Portugal that was, in part, caused by wind and
solar. Duncan Burt of Reactive Technologies talks about the causes
of that blackout and what must be done to prevent future problems.
