My Canadian Experience
Report for January to April 2023

I'm somewhat spoiled for choice for my online shopping when it comes to local shops in Chatham these days.  I am using Instacart which now offers online shopping through...

Walmart (Groceries, Prepared meals, Butcher, etc., etc.)
Canadian Superstore (Groceries, Prepared meals, Butcher, etc.)
Food Basics (Grocery)
Giant Tiger (Home goods, Women's, Kids & Men's Fashion, Groceries)
LCBO (Liquor and Wine Shop)
Shoppers Drug Mart (Drugstore, Personal care, Groceries)
M & M Food Market (Frozen Food and Meals)
Dollarama (Pantry, Household Essentials, Kitchen)
Staples (Stationery, Electronics)
Rexall (
A leading pharmacy retailer)
Michaels Canada (Craft Supplies, Stationary, Decor)
PetSmart (Pet food and pet accessories)

The only two big grocery stores which still don't do online shopping are No Frills and Sobeys.

I did some renovation work on my house over this period.  Removed the carpet on the upper hallway on the bedroom floor and then sanded and stained the floor boards. All came up well.  I also arranged with my cleaning lady to polish all the wood work with Pledge and its all looking better.

Mind you when the floor was being sanded my fire alarm went off and in the end the alarm company turned it off for a few hours to allow time for the air to clear.

I have used Doug for a number of years now and he's for hire if you live around the Chatham Kent area of Canada.  As he says...

Man willing to do small yard work, cut grass, paint, trim hedges, and even a bit of house repair work. You can call him on 226 627 3467.

He helped me clean out my basement, planted some flowers in the garden, removed some carpeting and sanded and stained the floor boards and a few other tasks as well and he doesn't charge a fortune and is very reliable.

------

My web income is not consistent so am now trying a new advertiser to see if they will be any better.  I'm needing to increase my storage so need another $100 a month over what I bring in each month. This is not a lot but I had hoped to not need any advertising on the site but with inflation looks like I need to bring in some extra income.

I do note with interest that being a UK pensioner due to me living in Canada my pension is frozen so no inflation increases for me.  I understand that if it were the other way round for a Canadian pensioner living in the UK they would get an increase which doesn't sound very fair.

------

It's tax season again so have now got my USA return done and also my Canadian taxes done and paid. So that's it for another year.

------

On health matters...

I'm still going to see my eye specialist in Chatham, Dr Anjema, where I now go every 8 weeks to get an injection in my good eye to stop any bleeding.

Also got some blood work done and my A1C was at 6.0 which is improvement since my last one which was 6.5.

Have had some back issues which is normal for me as for many years I seem to twist myself and put my back out. This usually means 8 weeks for recovery but am getting somewhat used to this now.

While Covid is still around it's now rarely talked about and we only need to wear masks when visiting health clinics and the like. I've just been advised by Ontario Health that I should get another Covid booster shot so will organise a visit to get that done early in May.

------

My friend, Beth Gay, who publishes "Beth's NewFangled Family Tree" phoned me with an update on her health and also her husband Tom. Both are going through a hard time and still some tough times ahead but they are both making progress.

Tom has been in a wheel chair for some 30 or so years and for the last 3 years has mostly been confined to bed. However he is now getting surgery to fix his wound and after that heals will have more surgery to close the wound.  That will take another 8 weeks or so.  After that however they expect him to be able to get around in his wheelchair again.  The good news is that they are now providing a new electric wheel chair which usually costs some $40,000 but they are providing it for him for only $3,000 and on a payment plan of $81 a month over 3 years. That is just doable for them although money will be tight for them.

Beth hopes to continue to do her publication but her doctor has advised her to try to cut back as she needs to regain her strength. As she has to stay with Tom at the hospital she isn't able to do her publication at this time.

If you want to support them you can write to them at:

or send them an email to bethscribble@aol.com and should you want to help them out financially just include a cheque payable to Elizabeth Gay.

-------

It's my impressions that Chatham seems to do better than any other area of Canada for the mildness of its Winters. We don't really get what they call lake effect snow so it's rare that we get any heavy snow.

Weather wise this period has been pretty good with only one day of deep snow and a couple of days of just an inch so much better than most of North America.

------

So that's about it for this period and will catch you up on things on the next update.
